Miranda Breitag discussed the upcoming Special Olympics State Equestrian event in Watertown on July 14, 2025, highlighting that while many know typical Special Olympics sports, the equestrian program is less publicized but very meaningful. Athletes from various South Dakota areas practice weekly from May to July, developing skills in showmanship, stock seat, trail, and barrel racing. Breitag, co-coaching with her mother, explained how riders are carefully matched with horses to ensure comfort and safety, fostering significant personal growth and independence.
The event, now held in Watertown instead of Huron, will take place at the K&H rodeo Grounds with free admission and encourages community attendance to support the athletes. The day includes check-in, an opening ceremony with the torch lighting and athlete’s oath, and competitions throughout the day. The program relies on volunteers and donations, partnering with Lake Area Tech’s OTA program, and supports athletes from children to adults. Breitag invites those interested to contact her for ways to help or learn more.
