Encouraging Young Riders: Building Passion and Skills at Queensland Endurance Horse Camp

The young endurance horse riders camp held at Imbil, organized by the Queensland Endurance Riders Association (QERA) and Dingo Creek Equestrian (DCE), focused on fostering passion, education, and camaraderie among junior riders rather than competition. Over a weekend filled with skill-building activities, fun events like egg-and-spoon relays and hoofball, and guided rides through scenic forest trails, participants learned essential horsemanship, endurance riding techniques, and horse care. Experienced riders and volunteers provided mentorship, emphasizing the importance of horse welfare, teamwork, and respect for the environment, while encouraging newcomers to ask questions and build confidence in a supportive setting.

The camp also highlighted the deep connections between horse and rider, the responsibility involved in endurance riding, and the value of community support. Organizers like Virginia Barber and Kaylea Maher shared their extensive experience to nurture young riders, while families such as Tash Willemse’s and Jay Randle’s demonstrated the generational love for the sport. With structured rides allowing juniors to log official distances and gain experience, the event aimed to inspire ongoing participation and growth in endurance riding, preparing riders for future challenges like the prestigious Tom Quilty Gold Cup.
