Elsa Dennert, driven by her passion for horses and helping others, operates Riding Peace Sensory Horseback Therapy in Aberdeen, offering a unique form of equine therapy based on the Draper Sensory Method. This therapy involves clients riding backwards on a horse with their eyes closed as the horse moves in circular patterns, aiming to rebalance the brain. It is used to help individuals with neurological conditions such as dementia, anxiety, PTSD, dyslexia, and traumatic brain injuries. Elsa, who discovered the therapy through Chris Reder of DTOM Veterans Ranch, became certified after experiencing personal benefits, including improved reading speed despite her dyslexia.
The therapy requires multiple sessions—typically starting with a package of 10—to achieve lasting brain reorganization and symptom improvement. Clients have reported significant progress, such as enhanced memory, socialization, and cognitive function, with effects visible on EEG scans. While sessions cost $150 each (discounted with packages) and are not covered by insurance, the therapy offers a promising alternative for mental health treatment. Elsa emphasizes that the process is gradual, with ongoing adjustments tailored to each client’s needs, and encourages relaxation and healing during sessions. Riding Peace is one of three providers of this therapy in South Dakota.
