Eileen Brennan Honoured for Lifelong Dedication to Preserving the Irish Draught Horse Breed

Eileen Brennan, honoured by the Irish Horse Board, has been a pivotal figure in preserving and promoting the Irish Draught horse, a key symbol of Ireland’s agricultural heritage. Based at Ballyharmon House near the Carlow border, she is widely recognized as the “Irish Draught doyenne” for her extensive leadership roles in organizations such as the Carlow Pony Club, National Ploughing Association, and Irish Draught Breeders Association. Her efforts have been crucial in reversing the decline of Irish Draught registrations, notably through a conservation project at Emo Court that combined breed preservation with public education, gaining high-profile support.

Beyond conservation, Eileen has significantly contributed to the Irish equestrian community by organizing major events and fostering youth involvement through the Carlow Pony Club. Her lifelong dedication and leadership have earned her a reputation as a “force of nature,” ensuring the continued appreciation and sustainability of Ireland’s indigenous horse breeding traditions for future generations.
