Drivers in Devon and Cornwall Urged to Slow to 10mph to Protect Horses After 58 Deaths

A new road safety campaign has been launched in Devon and Cornwall following 58 horse deaths caused by road traffic accidents in the past year. Spearheaded by the Devon and Cornwall Police Rural Affairs team and the British Horse Society (BHS), the initiative urges drivers to reduce their speed to 10mph when passing horses on rural roads to improve safety for both horses and riders. This campaign responds to over 3,100 horse-related road incidents recorded in 2024 and was prompted by a Parliamentary debate calling for stronger protections for equine road users. Drivers are advised to give at least two meters of space when passing horses and to be patient and aware of equestrian activity, especially in areas like Dartmoor.

The new speed limit and safety measures aim to create a safer and more predictable travel environment for all road users, including tourists and business travelers who frequent rural areas. While the 10mph limit may cause slight delays, it is essential for preventing accidents and protecting vulnerable equestrians. The campaign also encourages riders to wear high-visibility gear and follow safety protocols. Collaboration between local police, the BHS, and the Mare and Foal Sanctuary highlights a community effort to reduce equine road incidents and promote safer coexistence on rural roads.
