Dr. Crystal Heath on Animal Welfare, Veterinary Ethics, and Bridging Activists with Veterinarians

Dr. Crystal Heath, a veterinarian deeply committed to animal welfare since her childhood in rural Northern California, reflects on her evolving relationship with animals, particularly horses, and her advocacy against inhumane practices in veterinary education. Influenced by her 4-H experiences and early exposure to animal rights literature, she challenges traditional vet school curricula that involve dissection and killing of animals, advocating for modern, humane alternatives like digital modules used in medical schools.

Currently focusing her veterinary practice on spay/neuter surgeries to combat pet overpopulation and shelter overcrowding, Dr. Heath also leads Our Honor, a nonprofit promoting ethical veterinary practices. She will speak at the Tampa Bay Veg Fest about bridging gaps between activists and veterinarians, sharing insights from her career and her efforts to reform veterinary education and practice.
