An outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has caused the deaths of dozens of swans in east London, particularly around West India and Millwall Docks. At least 51 swans were found dead over two days, with the virus notably affecting young cygnets born earlier in the spring. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) confirmed the cause and advised the public not to touch dead or sick birds and to practice good hygiene if they come into contact with wild bird droppings or feathers.
Avian flu, which affects both wild birds and poultry, has multiple strains, most of which cause little harm, but the current strain is highly lethal and infectious. The Swan Sanctuary described this outbreak as particularly severe, emphasizing the risk to young birds. Public health warnings stress avoiding contact with affected birds to prevent potential spread and contamination.
