Detroit Seeks Sculptor for New Joe Louis Statue Celebrating His Equestrian Legacy

The City of Detroit is seeking a sculptor to create a second statue honoring Joe Louis, this time celebrating his contributions as an equestrian who promoted African American participation in horse riding during segregation. The statue will highlight Louis’s establishment of the nation’s first All-Negro Horse Show at his Spring Hill Farm, providing a platform for Black riders and trainers. This follows an earlier statue unveiled in 2023 that focused on Louis’s achievements as a golfer. The new statue, which must feature a horse, is planned for unveiling in 2026 or 2027, with a $175,000 commission funded by Detroit’s Public Art Fund.

Artists interested in the commission must submit applications by December 30, 2025, including portfolios, references, and an artist statement addressing their interest and community impact. A selection committee comprising community members, artists, the Louis family, and business owners will choose the sculptor. The project aims to honor an often-overlooked aspect of Joe Louis’s legacy, with his family expressing gratitude for the recognition of his role in expanding access to equestrian sports for African Americans.
