The long-anticipated demolition of Pimlico Race Course is expected to begin imminently, with parts of the backstretch potentially starting late next week. Maryland Jockey Club president Bill Knauf and Maryland Stadium Authority executive Gary McGuigan outlined plans during a recent community meeting, detailing the phased teardown of barns, outbuildings, and grandstands through mid-November. The demolition, costing approximately $14.3 million, is part of a larger $400 million redevelopment project approved by the state, aiming for a reopening in time for the 2027 Preakness Stakes.
While final redevelopment plans are still being finalized, the project will completely rebuild Pimlico, with no hotel included, much to the concern of preservation advocates. Meanwhile, the 2025 Preakness will be held at Laurel Park, marking the last race under The Stronach Group’s ownership before the Maryland Jockey Club takes over and the Laurel property is expected to be sold. The infield is already undergoing preparatory excavation work ahead of the demolition.
