The National Zoological Park in Delhi has seen varied interest in its Animal Adoption Scheme, with birds, reptiles, and mammals like the blackbuck being popular choices. The scheme peaked in 2022-23, raising Rs 20.47 lakh from 39 participants, initially gaining traction during the pandemic with a focus on smaller animals. In 2023-24, although the number of adoptions dropped to six, the focus shifted to larger animals, generating around Rs 18 lakh.
Adoption fees vary by species, starting from Rs 700 annually for smaller birds to higher amounts for larger mammals. The initiative promotes public engagement and accountability, aiding animal care and habitat conservation. The zoo plans to introduce shorter adoption durations to encourage wider participation in the future.
