Delaware Woman Sues HITS Ocala and Local Man After Horse Attacked by Dog with Alleged Violent Propensity

A Delaware woman, Shoshana Altschuler, has filed a lawsuit against Horse Shows In The Sun (HITS) Ocala Winter Circuit and a local man, Darius N. Edwards, after her horse, Gloria Van Het Kapelhof, was allegedly attacked and bitten by Edwards’ dog on HITS property in March 2025. The complaint claims the dog, described as a breed known for violence, escaped confinement and caused trauma to the horse, resulting in a physical handicap and significant medical and boarding expenses. Altschuler’s attorney argues that HITS was negligent in maintaining the premises and allowing the dangerous dog to roam freely.

The lawsuit seeks damages exceeding $50,000, including compensation for Gloria’s loss of value, given her status as a competitive Belgian Warmblood mare with a prestigious lineage and a history of competing in show jumping events at the venue. The case highlights claims of strict liability against Edwards for the dog’s actions and negligence against HITS for failing to ensure the safety of animals and participants on their property.
