Delaware Park is making a significant move into top-tier horse racing by hosting the inaugural Delaware Derby for three-year-olds, positioning itself alongside prestigious races like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. Although none of the 11 horses entered competed in those Triple Crown classics, many have participated in major prep races. Favorites include Admiral Dennis, Omaha Omaha, and Surfside Moon, with notable jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. expected to compete. The Delaware Derby aims to spotlight emerging talent that could impact major summer races such as the Haskell Stakes and Travers Stakes.
In addition to the Delaware Derby, the stakes-filled Saturday card features several other key races, including the Delaware Oaks for fillies and mares, which continues Delaware Park’s tradition of highlighting female horses. Top contenders like Margie’s Intention and Paris Lily are set to compete, alongside Virginia Oaks winner Fondly. Trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado will also showcase horses like Kay Army and Sidamara in other stakes events. The day includes a mandatory Pick 5 wager, themed giveaways, and special events, enhancing the overall racing experience at Delaware Park.
