State officials have confirmed that 14 horses tested positive for a deadly and highly contagious equine herpes virus following a barrel race in Waco. The virus causes fever, neurological symptoms, and has a mortality rate of 30%-50%, with some horses becoming carriers even after recovery. Due to its ease of transmission through direct contact, respiratory droplets, and shared equipment, stables like Turkey Creek Stables and the San Antonio Polo Club have implemented strict lockdowns and heightened biosecurity measures to prevent further spread.
In response to the outbreak, several equestrian events, including the Uvalde rodeo Qualifier, have been canceled to limit exposure. Industry leaders emphasize the importance of calm, responsible actions, encouraging horse owners to keep their animals isolated and monitor the situation closely. Despite the severity of the virus, there is cautious optimism that with proper precautions, the equine community can manage and eventually overcome the outbreak.
