Cumberland County Animal Services is reopening to the public on a limited basis starting February 23, following a pause of over a month on intakes and adoptions due to an outbreak of an upper respiratory illness. Adoptions will be available by appointment only, with potential adopters encouraged to review available animals online beforehand. The shelter is also resuming stray animal intake during normal hours and owner surrenders by appointment to ensure safety. Foster operations and volunteer activities are restarting as well.
The shelter has made significant progress in stabilizing the environment, with declining infection rates and ongoing precautionary measures. While adopters can meet animals in a bonding room, walk-throughs and meet-and-greets with family pets remain suspended for now. Animal Services Director Diane Pfeifer expressed gratitude for community support and emphasized the team’s dedication to safely reopening and helping more pets find homes.
