Craig Wheeler’s career in the Thoroughbred industry began unexpectedly, starting with a love for horses in Rhode Island and leading to a summer job with a prominent Thoroughbred breeder that shaped his future. After gaining international experience in Ireland, Wheeler returned to the U.S. and worked his way up to managing Hobeau Farm for 20 years before establishing his own breeding and training operation.
Wheeler’s breeding and training operation in Florida has been successful, with one of his notable achievements being Imprimis, a Florida-bred turf sprinter who became a multiple graded stakes winner. Wheeler finds Florida to be ideal for raising foals due to the weather and natural advantages in the region, making it a healthy environment for the horses. His passion for Thoroughbreds and dedication to the industry have led to memorable moments like Imprimis’s victory at the 2018 Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico.
Despite starting far from the track in Rhode Island, Wheeler’s journey in the Thoroughbred industry has been filled with unexpected opportunities and successes. From working at top-class operations to managing his own breeding and training operation, Wheeler’s dedication and passion for horses have been evident throughout his distinguished career.
