Sandra Schmid, a social worker and educational tutor from Cork, has embarked on her second horseback journey along the Wild Atlantic Way, starting in Donegal Town. Traveling about 20km daily with her horse Skye, dog Turnip, and a tent, she has been warmly welcomed by locals, staying with families, farms, and equestrian centers. This ride supports Hairy Henry Care Farm’s social enterprise, specifically raising awareness and funds for the ‘Giddy Up and Go’ programme, which helps young teens facing challenges in mainstream education by teaching them horse care and riding skills in a supportive environment.
The fundraiser aims to sustain this educational programme, which offers teens aged 12-16 a pathway back into education and career opportunities through an educational award. Sandra plans to continue this annual Wild Atlantic Way ride, with her 2025 leg starting in Donegal and potentially extending to Mayo and Westport, to maintain ongoing support for the initiative.
