Constance Jaeggi: Capturing the Spirit of Escaramuza and the Empowerment of Women in Equestrian Culture

Constance Jaeggi’s journey from Switzerland to Texas was fueled by her deep fascination with horses, leading her to pursue a competitive riding career and eventually become a rancher. While in college, she began documenting the intricate relationship between humans and horses through photography, which allowed her to explore this connection more deeply. Her interest expanded to include the tradition of escaramuza, a female event in the Mexican sport of charrería, characterized by its vibrant performances and historical significance.

Jaeggi’s project, “Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home,” was inspired by her research into the escaramuza tradition and the stories of contemporary riders. This ongoing series features portraits of Mexican-American women in traditional attire, showcasing their strength and resilience as they balance various responsibilities. The exhibition also incorporates poetry from two poets, ire’ne lara silva and Angelina Sáenz, which complements the visual narratives and highlights the cultural backgrounds of the women involved.

The sport of escaramuza presents unique challenges, particularly for women who navigate strict dress codes and the complexities of identity as immigrants in the U.S. Jaeggi’s work sheds light on these experiences, emphasizing the empowerment and dedication of the riders while addressing broader themes of cultural identity and gender dynamics within the sport. The exhibition is currently on view at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago.
