Connemara Pony Heritage Centre Opens in Connemara National Park, Showcasing Ireland’s Beloved Breed

The Connemara Pony Heritage Centre has officially opened within Connemara National Park in County Galway, offering visitors an immersive experience dedicated to the iconic Connemara pony breed. The centre, located at the foot of Diamond Hill overlooking a paddock with seven ponies tracing their lineage to animals gifted in the 1970s, is the culmination of over 20 years of planning and collaboration between park staff and local experts. It features a rich narrative through imagery, film, digital displays, and simulator headsets, with opportunities to meet ponies and learn about their pedigree and temperament from knowledgeable staff.

Open year-round and free to visit, the centre is fully accessible and positioned to attract local families, tourists, and international pony enthusiasts. Beyond tourism, it serves as a conservation and educational resource, strengthening the cultural and natural heritage connections within Connemara National Park. The project highlights the deep ties between the Connemara pony and the region’s identity, providing a compact yet engaging introduction to one of Ireland’s most beloved native breeds.
