Commandment Passes Two-Turn Test to Win Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Commandment, a 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief trained by Brad Cox, showcased his stamina and two-turn ability by winning the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on February 28. Commandment, the 2-1 favorite, held off a strong late challenge from Chief Wallabee to win by a neck, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.33 on a fast track. This victory earned him 50 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby, likely securing his spot in the race. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. praised Commandment’s professionalism and finishing strength, while Cox indicated the Florida Derby (G1) as the logical next step.

The colt’s pedigree adds to his classic potential, being out of the Grade 1-winning Orb mare Sippican Harbor and sired by Into Mischief, a leading sire with three Kentucky Derby winners. Commandment’s performance and bloodlines position him as a top contender for the Triple Crown trail. Meanwhile, Chief Wallabee impressed in defeat with a late surge, and other notable runners like Solitude Dude and Bravaro showed promise despite fading late. The Fountain of Youth Stakes continues to be a key prep race, with many past participants going on to win the Kentucky Derby.
