Columbia Falls Commission Votes to Recommend Self-Governing Powers for City

The Columbia Falls government review commission voted 2-1 to recommend moving forward with pursuing self-governing powers for the city, which would allow Columbia Falls to adopt laws not explicitly prohibited by state or federal law. While currently there is no pressing need for these powers, commissioners noted that rapid societal changes, such as advances in technology and artificial intelligence, could make them valuable in the future. The recommendation must still be approved by city voters, likely in a 2026 primary election, and the commission plans to hold public hearings and finalize their report early next year.

Self-governing powers have been beneficial for other Montana cities like Havre, which used them to address issues with abandoned buildings more effectively than state law previously allowed. Although most Columbia Falls residents appear satisfied with the current city manager government structure, the review commission was established following a 2024 voter-approved initiative to examine city governance, including the potential adoption of self-governing powers. The commission’s recommendation will set the stage for a public vote, with the city bearing the cost of the election.
