Colorado Horse Rescue Faces Record Waitlist as Demand for Equine Care Grows

Colorado Horse Rescue, a Boulder County nonprofit dedicated to providing safe homes for horses, is currently at full capacity with 60 horses on its 50-acre property. The organization offers rehabilitation, training, and adoption services but faces a growing waitlist of 40 horse owners seeking to surrender their animals, up from an average of 25 last year. This increase is attributed to both heightened visibility of the rescue and more horses needing rehoming, including 34 retired dude and guest ranch horses from the Annie Project program.

The nonprofit accepts horses from private owners, animal control seizures, and public auctions, often prioritizing cases based on urgency and owner circumstances. Financial challenges frequently drive owners to surrender horses, with care costs averaging $500 per horse monthly. Colorado Horse Rescue relies on community donations and over 220 volunteers to meet rising demand, striving to ensure every horse receives proper care and a second chance at life. More information and adoption listings are available on their website, chr.org.
