Clare Balding is a well-known BBC sports broadcaster, having joined the channel in 1994 and covered major events like the Olympics, Wimbledon, Crufts, and the Paralympic Games. Before her broadcasting career, Clare was a successful amateur flat jockey and Champion Lady Rider in 1990, coming from a horse-racing family with her late father Ian Balding being a prominent trainer. Clare’s passion for horse riding has been a lifelong source of joy and freedom for her.
In her personal life, Clare has been with her wife Alice Arnold, a fellow broadcaster, for over two decades. They met in 1999, started dating in 2002, and married in 2015 after a civil partnership in 2006. Clare has spoken openly about the positive impact of coming out on her happiness and work. The couple live in Chiswick and plan to move to a more dog-friendly home after losing their Tibetan terrier. Clare also overcame thyroid cancer diagnosed in 2009, receiving successful treatment and being declared cancer-free by 2011.
