Chris Smith and Messarado Blue Win First HOYS International Showjumping Class

Chris Smith and his home-bred mare Messarado Blue won their first purple rug at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in the opening international showjumping class, benefiting from a strategic break and careful preparation to peak at the right time. Their success was attributed to the international stairway league, which offers opportunities to riders with fewer international appearances, and Chris’s deep understanding of the mare’s needs, allowing them to deliver a commanding performance in the Grandstand Welcome Stakes.

In another highlight, Laura Renwick returned to HOYS after more than a decade to win the CSI3* evoke stakes speed class with her home-bred stallion Cottee, praised for his agility and competitive spirit despite being relatively inexperienced indoors. Cottee’s ability to adapt mid-course and maintain speed secured their victory, with Ireland’s Richard Howley and Charlotte Ash finishing closely behind. Both riders showcased the strength of home-bred horses and the importance of careful training and timing in top-level showjumping.
