China Urges Japan to Respect Fisheries Agreement After Seizure of Chinese Fishing Vessel

The Chinese government, through Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian, emphasized that Chinese fishermen are instructed to operate legally and that China firmly protects their lawful rights. This statement came after Japan seized a Chinese fishing vessel and arrested its captain for entering Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and allegedly avoiding inspection. China urged Japan to adhere to the China-Japan Fisheries Agreement, enforce laws impartially, and ensure the safety and rights of Chinese crew members. The Chinese Consulate General in Fukuoka is assisting with the safe return of the crew.

The incident, involving a “tiger net fishing boat” with 11 crew members, marked the first seizure of a Chinese fishing vessel by Japan since 2022. The captain was released on bail after submitting a guarantee. Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianghao highlighted the worsening state of China-Japan relations, attributing the current severe tensions entirely to Japan.
