Cheltenham Festival 2026: Hansard the Racehorse Dies After Fatal Injury in Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy

Hansard, an eight-year-old gelding trained by Gary and Josh Moore, tragically died after sustaining a fatal leg injury during the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase on the opening day of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival. The injury occurred on the flat section of the course, prompting the jockey to pull up immediately. Despite prompt veterinary attention, the decision was made to euthanize Hansard to prevent further suffering. This marked the first equine fatality of the festival.

The Jockey Club and Cheltenham racecourse expressed their condolences to Hansard’s connections and reiterated their commitment to equine welfare, highlighting significant investments in veterinary science and safety initiatives. British racing operates under a Horse Welfare Board, which has successfully reduced fall and fatal injury rates over recent decades, with ongoing collaboration with welfare organizations to ensure the well-being of racehorses.
