The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol Division, established in 1950, has retired after 75 years of dedicated service. Known for their presence at parades, fairs, and various public safety duties such as search-and-rescue, crowd control, and traffic management, the unit served as important community ambassadors. The division required rigorous training for both officers and horses, with deputies undergoing extensive law enforcement and horseback skills training, while horses had to meet strict temperament standards to handle public safety scenarios.
Despite its long history and symbolic role, the Mounted Patrol faced challenges including aging members, high costs, and demanding state-mandated training, which led to difficulties in recruiting new volunteers. At retirement, the unit had dwindled to seven active officers and three horses from its original peak of twenty-five members. The division was honored recently by local officials, marking the end of an era for this unique law enforcement team.
