Chasing Dreams: The Journey of Latino Jockeys at the Kentucky Derby

Junior Alvarado, a Venezuelan jockey, has pursued his dream of competing in the Kentucky Derby since childhood. Starting as a “backboy” in Venezuela, he aspired to become a winning jockey and eventually moved to the U.S. to achieve that goal. Now 38, Alvarado has participated in the Derby five times and hopes to win on his sixth attempt with his horse, No. 18 Sovereignty.

The Kentucky Derby attracts a diverse group of jockeys, with many coming from Latin America, where horse racing is a significant sport. The American Business Immigration Coalition estimates that up to 70% of U.S. jockeys are on visas, highlighting the importance of immigration policies for these athletes. Despite challenges posed by recent immigration crackdowns, industry advocates believe that the unique contributions of international jockeys enrich American horseracing.

Latino jockeys have increasingly gained recognition in the sport, with many overcoming immigration hurdles to compete at high levels. Events honoring their contributions, like the one held by the Louisville Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, emphasize their vital role in the Derby. Jockeys like Joel Rosario and Martin Garcia share stories of perseverance and success, illustrating the immigrant experience and the growing prominence of Latino talent in American horseracing.
