Charlotte Schickedanz, a fifth-generation Trakehner horse breeder from Toronto, continues her family’s legacy of breeding exceptional horses, a tradition that began with her father’s family in East Prussia before World War II. After relocating to Canada as refugees in 1951, her family reestablished their breeding operation, notably producing the legendary show jumper Abdullah. Charlotte now runs the 70-horse Schickedanz Galten Farms, focusing on refining bloodlines and producing top-level competitors like Freedom GS, a 13-year-old Trakehner/Westphalen mare who has excelled in eventing and jumping under Canadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix.
Freedom GS, tracing back to Abdullah and other notable sires, has achieved significant success including wins at major four-star events and representing Canada at the Olympics and World Championships. Charlotte and Jessica share a strong partnership, with Jessica’s dedication and positivity highly valued by Charlotte. Looking ahead, they aim for Freedom to compete at the LA28 Olympics and are preserving her genetics through advanced reproductive technology to secure the future of their breeding program. This ongoing collaboration highlights the blend of tradition, innovation, and passion driving the Schickedanz breeding legacy.
