Cesar Parra, a former Olympian dressage rider, has been suspended for 15 years by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) due to repeated and serious abuse of horses. The suspension, effective from February 2, 2024, also includes fines totaling $31,000. The FEI’s investigation, prompted by multiple allegations and extensive video evidence, found Parra guilty of horse abuse, conduct damaging to the sport’s reputation, and breaching the FEI code of conduct on horse welfare.
The FEI and US Equestrian emphasized that Parra’s actions violated fundamental principles of horse welfare, leading to this unprecedented disciplinary action. The case highlighted the need for stronger regulations, prompting US Equestrian to implement new rules allowing disciplinary measures for mistreatment outside competitions. Both organizations underscored their commitment to enforcing strict standards to protect horse welfare and maintain the integrity of equestrian sports.
