The Central Valley Fire District’s large animal rescue program, created in partnership with Hardaway Veterinary Hospital, was recently tested for the first time when a 29-year-old horse named Dream fell off a bridge into Belgrade Creek. Veterinarian Jared Hardaway and Central Valley firefighters responded quickly, using specialized equipment and techniques practiced during their December training to safely rescue the hypothermic horse. After being stabilized on site with blankets and IV fluids, Dream was transported to the veterinary clinic for further care and has since recovered, returning home bright and alert.
This rescue highlights the importance of the collaborative program, which aims not only to save large animals in emergencies but also to support the community by providing a reliable resource for critical situations involving animals. Both Hardaway and firefighter EMT Eddy Ivey emphasize that the program’s success depends on community awareness and encourage people to call emergency services when large animals are in danger.
