The Washington Thoroughbred industry celebrated its champion racehorses at Emerald Downs, with Lonesome Boy being named Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old colt or gelding. Other top honors went to Precise Timing and Big Bowie for top 2-year-olds, and Chai for champion 3-year-old filly. Older horses Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Blazingbellablu were also recognized as consecutive state champions.
Additional horse honors were awarded to Huge Bigly, Coastal Jazz, Alternation, Barkley, and OTTB Nowlookatme. Tampa Bay Downs race caller Jason Beem received the Mark Kaufman Media Award, while retiring Washington Horse Racing Commissioner Robert Lopez was given the WTBOA/WHBPA Special Recognition Award. Trainers Bonnie Jenne and Tim McCanna, jockey J. Carlos Montalvo, and Emerald Downs track superintendent Wayne Damron also received special recognition awards.
Nina and Ron Hagen were named Breeders of the Year for the second year in a row and eighth time overall. John Parker’s Lonesome Boy, Precise Timing, and Chai were among the top horses recognized at the event, along with Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Blazingbellablu. Special recognition awards were also given to individuals such as Jason Beem, Robert Lopez, Bonnie Jenne, Tim McCanna, J. Carlos Montalvo, and Wayne Damron.
