On August 21, 2017, the Catania State Police Mounted Unit seized 10 horses suffering from severe neglect, following reports from concerned citizens and intervention by Italian Horse Protection Onlus and Progetto Islander. The horses were found malnourished, dehydrated, and kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions, including two mothers with young foals and three males confined in a dilapidated shack. The animals have since been placed in temporary stalls and are now available for adoption through Progetto Islander.
The two owners involved are repeat offenders, previously reported and penalized for similar mistreatment cases. The swift action by the police and support from volunteer organizations was praised by the associations, highlighting the importance of timely intervention in animal welfare cases.
