CARF Announces Cease of Golden State Racing Operations and Strategic Reorganization

The California Authority of Racing Fairs announced that it will cease all Golden State Racing stabling and training operations at the Alameda County Fairgrounds upon completion of its contract on March 25. This decision was made with care and concern for those impacted, including horsemen, employees, and industry stakeholders. The retirement of executive director Larry Swartzlander was also announced.

CARF officials stated that they are undergoing a strategic reorganization to focus on supporting California fairgrounds and their satellite wagering operations. The organization will be managed by the executive committee during this reorganization period. Stakeholders in southern California will intensify efforts to develop a single circuit for Thoroughbred racing at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos, with higher purse levels and opportunities for horses previously based in northern California.

Critics of the single-circuit plan argue that not all Northern California horses are suited to racing in Southern California. The Thoroughbred Owners of California noted that the new structure will help ensure the economic impact of the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry in California, with purse increases and additional racing opportunities. Continued fair racing in Northern California appears improbable without a collection of individual fair tracks conducting meets and securing stabling and training for horses.
