Lucinda Sims, a 65-year-old cancer survivor from Hampshire, and her retired racehorse Zarkandar, known as Gino, have been named finalists for the inaugural Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charity Trust RoR Partnership of the Year Award. This award, part of the 2026 The Jockey Club RoR Awards, celebrates the special bonds between former racehorses and their owners, emphasizing connection over competition. Gino, gifted to Ms. Sims in 2018 after a successful racing career, has played a crucial role in helping her overcome personal hardships, including the loss of her husband and two battles with breast cancer.
Since recovering, Ms. Sims has raised over £5,000 for the NHS in gratitude for their care, while Gino has adapted to a new life, including side saddle riding and assisting Ms. Sims’ granddaughter in learning to ride. The public can vote for their favorite finalist until January 9, with the winner to be announced at Cheltenham Racecourse on January 24. The award highlights the versatility of former racehorses and the inspiring relationships they build with their owners.
