Canadians are invited to provide feedback on proposed updates to the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Equines, with public consultations open until March 12. The National Farm Animal Care Council initiated the revision in 2023, involving experts and stakeholders to improve standards for horse and donkey care. Key changes include new housing requirements like mud management and mandatory bedding depth, stricter air quality limits, and making veterinary relationships mandatory except in areas without vet access.
The draft code also introduces a ban on punishment and the use of pain or fear in training, and prohibits selling unfit horses for slaughter as an alternative to euthanasia. The updated code aims to enhance animal welfare and is expected to be finalized and released in 2027.
