Canadian equestrian Ian Millar, renowned as “Captain Canada,” announced his retirement from international showjumping after a distinguished career highlighted by a record-breaking 10 Olympic appearances—the most by any athlete in any sport. Over his career, Millar earned a team silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and achieved a top-10 individual finish in London 2012. He also won multiple Pan American Games medals, including four golds, and was a 12-time Canadian showjumping champion. His Olympic streak was only interrupted by Canada’s boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games.
Millar, 72, expressed deep pride in representing Canada and emphasized the importance of the horse-rider bond. Having been honored with the Order of Canada and inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, he now plans to focus on coaching young horses and riders, aiming to pass on his expertise and passion to the next generation of equestrians.
