Calls grow to make reporting car collisions with cats a legal requirement in Guernsey

More than 550 people have signed a petition in Guernsey calling for a legal requirement to report collisions involving cats, which currently only applies to larger animals like dogs, horses, and livestock. Dr Nichola Lloyd, who lost two cats to road accidents, described the lack of legal obligation to report cat collisions as “completely bonkers,” emphasizing that cats are family members and deserve the same consideration. Jersey has already made it law to report cat collisions, with a fine of £10,000 for non-compliance.

Animal charity GSPCA reports 200-300 cat road incidents annually, highlighting challenges in reuniting injured or deceased cats with owners, especially since only about 80% of cats are microchipped. Kayleigh Mills, who started the petition after witnessing a cat hit on her street, stressed the inconsistency in reporting laws and the need for cats to be prioritized similarly to other animals. The campaign reflects growing concern over animal welfare and the emotional impact on pet owners.
