At the FEI General Assembly, a proposal was made to award medals to horses as well as their riders at the upcoming LA28 Olympic Games, recognizing both as athletes delivering the performance. Quentin Simonet, president of the European Equestrian Federation, suggested this change to add value and improve upon past Olympics. The idea was well received by LA28 organizers, including Niccolò Campriani, who expressed strong support, though he noted the final decision rests with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
FEI president Ingmar De Vos also endorsed the proposal and indicated the FEI would formally approach the IOC about it. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the horse’s integral role in equestrian sports, with LA28 aiming to challenge traditional norms and enhance the Games’ inclusivity and acknowledgment of all contributing athletes.
