California Regulators Cancel Live Horse Racing at Big Fresno Fair After Multiple Horse Deaths

State regulators have officially canceled live horse racing at the Big Fresno Fair following a narrow 4-3 vote, citing safety concerns after three racehorse deaths last fall. Despite the fair’s horse racing generating significant revenue and attendance, the California Horse Racing Board denied the requested race dates for September, influenced by public and political opposition. Animal rights advocates, including PETA, expressed relief, emphasizing the risks to horses and opposing racing due to fatalities.

Fair organizers, disappointed by the decision, remain committed to preserving the 140-year tradition and plan to pursue opportunities for racing in 2026. Veterinarians highlighted the unusual frequency of severe injuries among young horses, reinforcing concerns about the sport’s safety. The cancellation follows the earlier withdrawal of the California Authority of Racing Fairs from managing race meets, and a new company’s attempt to revive racing was unsuccessful.
