French raider Calandagan delivered a commanding performance to win the Champion Stakes at Ascot by two and a quarter lengths, defeating favorite Ombudsman. Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, Calandagan, who had previously faced interference in last year’s race, was held up early before launching a strong, uninterrupted challenge in the straight. Despite a late surge from Ombudsman, Calandagan, a King George winner, maintained control and finished strongly, with Almaqam and Eclipse winner Delacroix trailing behind.
Trainer Graffard praised Calandagan’s maturity and adaptability over the season, highlighting the horse’s affinity for the Ascot track and his efficient performance over the mile-and-a-half distance. Ombudsman’s connections acknowledged the solid pace and competitive nature of the race, with jockey William Buick and trainer John Gosden commending their horse’s effort despite being outpaced by the impressive winner. The race marked Graffard’s 12th Group 1 victory of the season, underscoring a highly successful campaign.
