For five years, Dave Bushey dreamed of seeing Bush Racing stable, founded by his father Bryan, compete in the prestigious Claiming Crown at Gulfstream Park. This dream became reality on November 15 when their horse, Point Dume, ran in the $200,000 Jewel race at Churchill Downs. Despite Bryan’s stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis in early 2024 and the challenges that followed—including a near-fatal hospital stay—his passion for horse racing remained a source of strength and joy for the family. The Busheys, known for their blue-collar approach and close-knit team, have built a successful claiming stable, emphasizing care for their staff and horses, with Point Dume exemplifying their belief that every claiming horse has the potential to shine.
Bryan’s illness has shifted the family’s perspective, prioritizing the experience and togetherness over winning. The Busheys cherish the support of their racing community and continue traditions like “Sausage Saturday” to honor their team. Bryan’s resilience and positive outlook inspire others battling cancer, with Dave urging patients to keep fighting. As Point Dume competes on the big stage, the Busheys celebrate not just the race but the journey and the bonds that racing has strengthened amid life’s hardships.
