Brookhaven Animal Rescue League: Four Decades of Compassion and Community Impact

Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (BARL), established in 1981 in Mississippi, has evolved from a small volunteer effort with outdoor pens to a vital nonprofit shelter serving multiple counties without government funding. Since moving into its current facility in 2006, BARL operates with a small staff and relies heavily on volunteers to care for over 1,100 animals annually, providing adoptions, spay/neuter services, and community education to promote humane pet care and reduce overpopulation.

Beyond animal rescue, BARL supports the community through affordable veterinary services, pet therapy, and educational programs, while hosting fundraisers and clinics. Currently, BARL urgently needs donations, foster homes, and especially new committed volunteers to sustain its mission. Volunteers emphasize the importance of involvement despite emotional challenges, encouraging the public to contribute in any way possible to ensure the safety and well-being of homeless pets.
