British Show Pony Society Adds Two New Working Sports Pony Classes to 2026 London International Horse Show

The British Show Pony Society (BSPS) is introducing two new working sports pony performance classes to the London International Horse Show (LIHS) finals starting in the 2026 season. One class will be for mares or geldings up to 148cm with riders under 18, while the other will include stallions up to 158cm with riders over 16 and no upper age limit. Both classes require ponies to be plaited, with fences set at 85cm and 95cm respectively. These additions aim to expand opportunities for riders to compete at this prestigious event, building on the success of previous BSPS classes that have attracted new participants.

The judging format emphasizes performance over conformation, with ponies assessed under saddle rather than being stripped for in-hand evaluation. Riders will be scored on presentation, jumping style and technique, galloping, manners, and rider effectiveness, with a total possible score of 120 marks. Penalties apply for faults such as knockdowns and refusals, with disqualification for multiple refusals or falls. These new classes complement existing lead-rein, first-ridden, cradle, and nursery stakes classes, with 15 qualifying opportunities open to both BSPS members and non-members (who must join to compete in the final). LIHS and BSPS officials highlight the classes as a way to broaden participation and showcase pony performance and rider skill.
