The City of Bradenton is revisiting the debate over horseback riding in Palma Sola Bay after new environmental findings raised concerns about water contamination. Tour operators like Florida Beach Horses highlight the area’s unique appeal for riding and swimming with horses, while environmental groups, including Suncoast Waterkeeper, warn of potential health risks from bacteria linked to horse waste in coastal waters. A recent city-commissioned study detected fecal bacteria associated with horses but did not conclusively identify horses as the primary source compared to other wildlife.
In response, environmental advocates recommend measures such as warning signs and a permit system to regulate horse activity and control waste. Bradenton officials emphasize that the study’s data is preliminary and that the horseback riding zone is not an official swimming area, despite recreational use. The city plans to conduct further research before making any regulatory decisions regarding horseback riding in Palma Sola Bay.
