Borealis Acres, a Shire horse breeding farm near Barrhead run by Leanne and David Bombay, gained recognition after their horses achieved multiple wins at the Calgary Stampede. Their 3-year-old mare, Rhea Borealis Miracle, earned Grand Champion senior Shire mare and several other placements, while another mare, Rhea Borealis Hopeful Zora, secured Reserve Grand Champion titles. Additionally, a colt sold from their farm, now named Omen, won Reserve Grand Champion Shire stallion and other awards, showcasing the farm’s dedication to breeding and promoting this rare breed.
Leanne Bombay, passionate about Shire horses since her youth, actively works to raise awareness about the breed’s dwindling population of around 3,000 worldwide. As director and secretary of the Canadian Shire Horse Association, she uses social media and storytelling to highlight the breed’s versatility beyond work horses, including disciplines like jumping and dressage. Through education and outreach, she aims to preserve and celebrate these gentle giants for future generations.
