The Directorate of Extension Education at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Ludhiana organized a meeting for Horse Breeders in Punjab to form a farmer collective aimed at boosting horse breeding and sports in the state. Around 40 breeders from across Punjab participated in the meeting and provided feedback, with Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, the Vice-Chancellor, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between breeders and scientists in enhancing horse breeding practices.
Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, the Director of Extension Education, highlighted the reputation of Punjab’s horse breeds and the potential for the state to become a leading breeding hub for horses, similar to its status in dairy animal breeding. Dr. S S Randhawa, the Dean of the College of Veterinary Science, stressed the importance of health management in horses to support their breeding, emphasizing the need for preventive health care plans to enhance reproductive management.
The meeting also included discussions on the facilities provided by the university for horse treatment, as well as the criteria for judging and selecting horses for breeding. Dr. Gill and other experts at the meeting emphasized the economic potential of organized horse breeding through a farmer collective with technical support from the university and the State Animal Husbandry Department.
