Two horses trapped in a muddy lagoon near Harrisburg, Missouri, were successfully rescued by the Boone County Fire Protection District after being stuck up to their backs in thick mud. The rescue, which occurred Wednesday evening, involved 18 firefighters, about half of whom were specially trained in large animal rescue through a 40-hour course. Veterinarians from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine assisted by sedating the horses before they were pulled free, and the animals were treated with antibiotics to prevent infection.
Large animal rescues like this one are relatively common for the district, especially during seasonal weather changes that create hazardous conditions such as thawing ice and mud. Only firefighters trained in the specialized rescue course handle direct contact with animals to ensure safety and proper use of equipment, while others provide support. The department emphasizes ongoing training and collaboration with veterinary professionals to effectively manage these complex rescues.
