The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a two-day wild horse and burro adoption event on June 19-20 at the Checotah Round-Up Club arena in Checotah, Oklahoma. The event will feature 200 wild horses and burros, including adults and yearlings that were once free-roaming on public lands. Adoptions will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 19 and from 8 a.m. to noon on June 20, with BLM staff available onsite to assist with applications and provide information.
The BLM conducts these adoption events as part of its efforts to manage healthy herds and protect rangeland resources by removing excess animals from public lands. Since 1973, over 280,000 wild horses and burros have been placed in approved homes nationwide. To qualify for adoption, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have no history of animal abuse, and meet specific housing requirements for the animals, including adequate corral space and secure fencing. For more details, interested parties can contact the BLM or visit their website.
