BLM Removes 1,675 Excess Wild Horses from Adobe Town Herd Management Area in Wyoming

The Bureau of Land Management’s Rawlins Field Office completed a wild horse gather in the Adobe Town Herd Management Area, southwestern Wyoming, from July 15 to August 2, 2025, removing approximately 1,675 excess wild horses. This effort is part of BLM’s ongoing mission to maintain healthy wild horse populations and protect fragile rangeland ecosystems under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. The Adobe Town area covers about 348,000 acres of mostly public land, and reducing horse numbers helps preserve rangeland health, wildlife habitat, and ecological balance.

All gathered horses were transported to off-range holding facilities in Colorado and Wyoming for veterinary care and preparation for adoption or placement through the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. The gather was conducted humanely under the Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program, with public observation opportunities provided. The operation included reuniting some horses with owners and releasing a few studs back into the herd to support population management aligned with land capacity and long-term ecosystem health.
