The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hosting a two-day wild horse and burro adoption event in Checotah, Oklahoma, on June 20-21 at the Checotah Round-Up Club arena. The event will feature 150 wild horses and burros, with adoptions taking place from noon to 6 p.m. on June 20 and from 8 a.m. to noon on June 21. BLM staff will be available to provide information and assist with the adoption process.
The animals available for adoption include adult and yearling horses, as well as burros that were previously free-roaming on public lands. BLM conducts periodic removals of excess animals to maintain healthy herds and protect rangeland resources. Since 1973, the BLM has successfully placed over 280,000 wild horses and burros in approved homes through its adoption and sale program.
To qualify for adoption, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have no history of animal abuse. Homes must provide adequate space, food, water, and shelter, with specific corral requirements based on the type of animal. All animals must be transported in covered, stock-type trailers. For more details, interested individuals can contact BLM or visit their website.
